After many years of wanting to go, I finally attended a performance at Wolf Trap. Evie, Oma, Opa and I attended a wonderful performance of Camelot.
The building is lovely and it was delightfully cool to be outside for the performance. We sat in the “good” seats –thank you Opa! And so we were in the shade for the first half of the play until the sun really set.
We were very pleasantly surprised with this rendition of Camelot. Not only were the performances excellent and the music beautiful. This performance showed Guenevere, Lancelot and Arthur in a much different way than what we remember of the Hollywood movie. Arthur was a mature and still powerful man. Gen was a young, opinionated, willful woman who grows during the story and ends as one who loves and respects her husband and makes a difficult, but correct choice. Lancelot is a passionate, idealist young man who respects and loves Arthur. The attraction between Gen and Lancelot is immense – and they struggle against it. At the moment of supreme temptation they turn their back and decide to do the right thing, but they are caught together by the villain Mordred and the queen is condemned to die. Lancelot saves Gen, but they do not run away together – he helps her escapes to a convent. The end is still tragic – Arthur attacks Lancelot’s castle, the knights of the round table are in arms against each other and Gen will live alone with her regrets. This is a true tragedy where we see that the penalty of sin is death. Though there is no redemption, sin is shown for what it truly is. Therefore this performance was satisfying because is demonstrated truth.
